Technology: Energy Management
Benchmark-based, whole building energy performance targets are becoming the best practice method for designing energy efficient and zero net energy buildings. Advantages include a static baseline (to allow for comparison of buildings over time), the ability to address energy use and efficiency for all building energy loads (not just the loads regulated by code), and the ability to carry design targets through to operations.

Wireless technology can lower the cost of retrofitting building HVAC system for higher energy efficiency. Applications include conversion of contant volume (CV) systems to variable air volume (VAV) or application of more sophisticated control schemes to VAV systems. Technology developed by VigilentTM has been demonstrated as the Discharge Air Regulation Technique (DARTTM) and SAV with InCITeTM. (Vigilent was previously known as Federspiel Controls.)

Since data centers have demanding and complex conditioning requirements, intelligent control requires monitoring of temperature at many points, and sophisticated algorithms to optimize the operation of cooling resources. With the use of wireless mesh networking, the implementation of such a system can be affordable and practical. Technology developed by VigilentTM has been demonstrated as Datacenter Automation Software and hardware (DASHTM). (Vigilent was previously known as Federspiel Controls)

The WIPAM system wirelessly links daylighting and occupancy controls to provide maximized energy savings. It can be used with any ballasted or incandescent lighting system
